The result, coupled with Nigeria’s victory over Togo earlier in the day, leaves Maxwell Konadu’s side third in Group B with one point from two matches, needing a win in their final group game and favourable results elsewhere to keep their tournament alive.
The Black Satellites, already on the back foot after Monday’s 4-2 opening-day defeat to defending champions Nigeria, saw the game turn against them inside the opening half-hour.
Ghana centre-back Kofi Kumah was shown a straight red card in the 30th minute for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, reducing the Black Satellites to ten men for the remainder of the contest.
The situation worsened moments later. From the resulting free-kick just outside the box, Burkina Faso struck directly to put the Etalons ahead and complete the punishment for Kumah’s foul.
To their credit, Ghana refused to fold. Growing into the game despite the numerical disadvantage, the Black Satellites levelled through Joseph Badu, who found the net from a corner routine only minutes after conceding to restore parity before the break.
The second half saw the ten-man Black Satellites finish the stronger of the two sides, creating a series of promising openings but failing to convert any of their better chances into a winning goal.
Ghana pressed persistently through the closing stages but were held to a point that ultimately keeps them alive in the tournament by the narrowest of margins.
The wider Group B picture now leaves Konadu’s side needing a specific combination of results on the final matchday.
Nigeria sit top of the group on six points from two wins after their earlier victory over Togo. Burkina Faso are second on four, Ghana third on one, and Togo eliminated on zero.
The Black Satellites must first beat Togo in their final group fixture to give themselves any chance of progressing. Then they must hope that Nigeria beat Burkina Faso in the other game.
A draw or defeat against Togo or a Burkina Faso avoiding defeat against Nigeria would end Ghana’s tournament at the group stage.
While Ghana are already assured of a place at the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as tournament hosts, exiting the WAFU B Championship at the first hurdle would be a bruising blow to Konadu’s preparation for that continental showpiece.
