The Dane began brightly against the world number eight, Jasmine Paolini, but was injured and ended up losing the round of 16.
After winning the first set 6–3, Tauson lost the second set 1–6 and then withdrew at 1–3 in the third set.
The Dane fought her best despite being in great pain, but when she was broken in the decisive set, she saw no reason to continue.
Tauson otherwise took control against the Italian in the first set and was successful in dictating the game, which allowed her to break serve at 2-1.
22-year-old Tauson had to fend off a single break point before she increased her lead to 3-1, but she was completely superb in her own service games, winning 12 out of 13 points to close out the set 6-2.
Momentum then shifted at the start of the second set as Tauson seemed to struggle under the intense heat and was broken in three successive games. She received treatment at 1-4 for what seemed to be a groin injury.
The Dane returned with her thigh in bandages but was clearly hampered in her movements, as Paolini quickly wrapped up the set 6-1.
However, Tauson gave it a shot in the third set. She put a lot of effort into her strokes to get the duels decided quickly. It triggered several big winners, but also quite a few unforced errors.
Once the Italian gained the upper hand in the baseline duels, Tauson virtually gave up.
Paolini played her injured opponent smartly, and when she broke Tauson's serve for 3-1, Tauson chose to withdraw.
