Holger Rune withdrew with what looked like a thigh injury after the first set against Flavio Cobolli in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid.
The eighth-seeded Dane withdrew with a muscle injury in his thigh after losing the first set 2-6 to Italian Flavio Cobolli in the second round of the clay tournament.
This marks Rune’s third retirement of the year, following Acapulco and Monte-Carlo.
It otherwise started off promisingly for Rune, who arrived in the Spanish capital on the back of having won the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona last week.
Trailing 2-3, Rune took a medical timeout, and chose to continue after the treatment.
But Rune seemed physically inhibited and quickly showed signs of resignation on court.
The Italian won four successive games, after which Rune chose to withdraw. The 22-year-old Italian will play American Brandon Nakashima, the No 31 seed, next.
