After posting what was at the time the most lopsided win of either singles bracket, Magdalena Frech told Flashscore her more aggressive style was starting to pay off.

The rank no. 57 Polish player demolished Slovenia's Veronika Erjavec, who was playing at just her third Grand Slam following exits at the hand of Suzan Lamens and Danielle Collins last year.

Fręch, playing her fifth Australian Open main draw and hoping to get to the Round of 16 for the first time, became the first player of the tournament to drop only two games with an attacking game that got 23 unforced errors out of her opponent.

The 28-year-old's serve was close to flawless, recording no double faults and an excellent first serve percentage of 71% in addition to winning 75% of return points against second serves, displaying similar ruthlessness to her wins over Elsa Jacquemot in Hobart and Marketa Vondrousova in Brisbane earlier this year.

"It's the first grand slam of the year so I tried to change my game as I had two months' break after Wuhan so it was a lot of time to rethink and to change my style," Fręch said after her win on Monday.

"I'm pretty happy with my game and how it looks in the new year and I'm starting it with positive energy."

Fręch set up a second round match against number seven seed Jasmine Paolini of Italy, having last met her in 2023 for one win on clay (Madrid) and one defeat on hardcourt (Cleveland).

Congratulations, Magdalena. How are you feeling physically after having to withdraw from Hobart? Was that more of a precautionary measure?

"It was precautionary because I didn't have a good diagnostic team over there (in Hobart) so I didn't want to risk something big happening with the leg. I just wanted to make sure I could play here fully recovered and be ready for the matches here."

To get the win in only one hour on what is becoming an uncomfortably hot day must be a big boost for your recovery going forward as well.

"I felt really great on the court and knew I had to stick to my plan and just play my naturally aggressive game. I think I did it pretty well today."

How do you like to recover at a Grand Slam? What does your routine look like?

"I'm just a typical player. I'll just be stretching and going to the gym after the match, having an ice bath and then the rest of the day off today for sure. Tomorrow I'll have just a light practice before the next round."

You’ve really been dominating when returning second serves lately. Is that something you see as one of your strongest assets at the moment?

"We'll see in the next match! But for sure, yes, recently. My style is different at the moment and I'm just trying to be more aggressive and attack more. It's gone pretty well this year."

There's a huge match coming up against Jasmine Paolini to get through to the third round again. Is there any part of your game you think needs to improve to beat her or are you feeling in a position to do so already?

"We will see on Wednesday but for sure I have a plan for this match. We have played twice and we're 1-1 so it's entirely open. It'll be another tough battle but I'll be prepared and I'll give it my best."
