Denmark will be handicapped by the absence of captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Portugal.

The Danish national team will have to do without the services of captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for the crucial fixtures against Portugal in the Nations League quarter-final.

The midfielder from Olympique Marseille has sustained a foot injury which will keep him out of action for a while. Hojbjerg was unable to train Thursday and Friday ahead of Saturday's defeat against Lens where the former Tottenham-profile played the entire match.

Hojbjerg was also unable to train Tuesday and has given up on trying to get fit for the much awaited clash against PSG in the upcoming weekend.

"Pierre is our captain and an important player who always leads us and lifts the team and the crowd, so of course it's a real shame. But injuries are part of football, and then others have to take responsibility and carry out the task, and fortunately we have many skilled players in that position", says national coach Brian Riemer in a press release from the Danish FA

Instead of Hojbjerg, Danish national team coach, Brian Riemer, has called up Genoa's Morten Frendrup.

"Morten has done excellently. In this case I have chosen others. He certainly has a dazzling career in the national team in the future. He is a player in whom I have great faith, but there is now a maximum number of players I can select for my squad", explained Riemer following the original selection.

Denmark will face Portugal on 20 - and 23 March.
