FC Midtjylland on Thursday evening overtook AGF at the top of the Danish Superliga table when they took advantage of AGF's 1-1 draw against away against FC Nordsjaelland by claiming a hard-fought and very fortunate 2-1 win away against Sonderjyske.

Sonderjyske 1-2  FC Midtjylland

FC Midtjylland went into the match against Sonderjyske boosted by their win against AGF on Monday and knowing that a win in Haderslev would allow them to steal top spot in the Superliga ahead of their Aarhus rivals.

The visitors also dominated proceedings from the start and took the lead after 24 minutes when Sonderjyske's third-choice keeper Benicio Pena failed to hang on to a shot from Dario Osorio, and Edward Chilufya was in the right place at the right time to slot home the rebound from close range.

However, the home side remained dangerous throughout the first half, and they were rewarded for their tenacity five minutes before the end of the half when Matthew Hoppe, on a counterattack, cut back past two defenders to launch a superb drive which went in via the post past keeper Elias Olofsson.

Four minutes after the interval, FC Midtjylland then recaptured the lead when Daniel Gretarsson was unfortunate to direct the ball into his own goal as he was trying to defend a cross from Victor Bak. Sonderjyske had chances to get back into the match and came close when Olofsson saved an attempt on the line, but the visitors held on for the three points.

FC Nordsjaelland 1-1 AGF

AGF arrived in Farum trying to restore morale after their disappointing defeat against FC Midtjylland, where they conceded two goals in the last six minutes, and they were fortunate not to fall behind after 28 minutes when Magnus Knudsen just got a touch to prevent Lamine Sadio from pushing the ball into an empty net.

Instead, the visitors got exactly the boost they were looking for three minutes later when Sebastian Jorgensen drove into the box and squared the ball across goal for the onrushing Patrick Mortensen, who slid the ball home to give AGF a 1-0 lead.

It was the 36-year-old veteran's first goal in the Superliga since 30th November last year, and the goal was also a success for coach Jakob Poulsen as Mortensen and Sebastian Jorgensen were two out of three new starters compared to the match on Monday.

On the pitch, the match stayed very even till the end. The home side enjoyed most possession, but AGF defended smartly for a long time, and goalkeeper Jesper Hansen was rock-solid between the posts this time.

He was, however, helpless when Levy Nene equalized with seven minutes left. Frederik Tingager's misplaced pass was intercepted by Caleb Yirenkyi, who launched a long delivery past the reach of Tingager, and Nene had no problems slotting the ball past Hansen.

Randers 2-2 FC Fredericia

In the final Superliga match of the day, Fredericia and Randers shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw that was ultimately dominated by a goalkeeping blunders and an absurd own goal.

The match was off to a fast and furious start as the visitors took the lead already after five minutes when Randers keeper Paul Izzo fisted a corner in the direction of Sofus Johansen, who did not hesitate to head the ball home to the immense frustration of the Randers bench.

In the other end, Fredericia keeper Valdemar Birksoe committed a somewhat similar error after 28 minutes when he failed to get a hand to an inswinging corner, leaving John Björkengren with an easy task to equalize.

The freak show of embarrassing mistakes in Randers then continued after 34 minutes when Martin Sjolstad, in his efforts to clear the danger, lifted the ball over Izzo and into his own net to give Fredericia a very fortunate 2-1 lead.

However, Randers did manage to restore parity shortly after the interval to stay just one point clear of the relegation zone when a fine delivery from Mathias Greve was poked into the back of the net by Cyril Edudzi.
