Turkish Super Lig Weekly: Hat-trick hero Osimhen shines for Galatasaray as Fenerbahce trip up

With the international break coming up, things couldn't have gone much better for Galatasaray, as they started the weekend with a win while Fenerbahce ended it with dropped points.

Two-time defending champions Galatasaray got the matchweek underway, hosting Antalyaspor on Friday evening with the opportunity to go 10 points clear - at least temporarily. And the match went perfectly for Okan Buruk and his troops.

Led by their main man and the imperious Victor Osimhen, Galatasaray produced their best performance in many a month, thumping their opponents 4-0.

The Nigerian striker bagged a hat-trick, and could have even had four for himself, but let Alvaro Morata - who also had a fine game - take the penalty to put them two goals up.

It wasn't the most eye-catching of hat-tricks, but Osimhen was in the right spot at the right time on all three occasions, becoming the first striker in Turkey this season to get to 20 goals, leapfrogging Krzysztof Piatek at the top of the Golden Boot standings in the process.

20 goals and four assists in 22 league games this campaign make for fantastic reading, and with six goals in his last three games, he has hit top gear at the perfect time for the champions.

Left back Eren Elmali - who signed from Trabzonspor in January - had another great game. He has yet to drop a bad performance for the club since making the move, and looks to have been a really intelligent acquisition in a real problem position for Galatasaray.

There was also a return to form for electric winger Baris Alper Yilmaz. After having a breakout 2023/24 campaign and starting this season really well too, his performances have been well below par recently.  But he was back to his best against Antalyaspor, and his assist for Osimhen's second goal was stunning.

So a dream day in the office for Galatasaray, but not so much for Fenerbahce.

Fener closed out the weekend, entertaining third-placed Samsunspor in what many anticipated would be a very tricky match for Jose Mourinho's men, which was made even harder by the fact they were dumped out after 120 minutes of football away at Rangers in the Europa League just three days earlier.

They huffed and puffed for 98 minutes, and even with Samsunspor going down to 10 men with around 20 minutes to go, they were unable to find a way through, settling for a damaging and disappointing 0-0 draw

Mourinho was quick to praise his players after the game, saying they created loads of chances and on another day, could have won the game if they were more clinical.

But the fact of the matter is, they only really started to create chances once Samsun had a man sent off, and Fener were looking rather flat and one-dimensional prior to that.

They constantly looked to get crosses into Edin Dzeko in the box, but their opponents were set up so well defensively that it didn't seem to bother them at all.

Samsun also had their goalkeeper to thank. Okan Kocuk - who used to play for Galatasaray - made a fantastic save in the dying minutes, palming away Dzeko's effort.

A lot of credit has to go to coach Thomas Reis. The German has been absolutely superb in charge of Samsun this season, making them look like a genuinely really well-oiled and strong side. On track for a spot in Europe next season, if they can spend a bit of money in the summer, they could get even better.

But for Fenerbahce, it has been a pretty bad week. Out of Europe and now nine points behind Galatasaray - albeit with a game in hand - they are lagging behind once again.

Interestingly, Fenerbahce haven't won a game against a team in the top five of the Super Lig this season, showcasing their struggles against higher-quality opposition.

Against Galatasaray, Samsunspor, Besiktas and Eyupspor, they have collected just four points from a possible 18 this season. That isn't good enough in the slightest, and if they don't win the title this season, they will look back on their performances in these matches as costly.

Contrasting fortunes for Besiktas and Trabzonspor

There has been a bit of a wake-up call in recent weeks for Besiktas manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. After making an unbeaten start to his Super Lig career with four wins and a draw from his first five games, Besiktas have now lost back-to-back matches, including on the weekend as they fell to a dismal 1-0 defeat at Konyaspor.

What's worse, Konya had a player sent off after 25 minutes, and incredibly, played the last 30 minutes with nine men.

Konya took the lead on the cusp of half-time, and Besiktas struggled to conjure up too many clear-cut chances, with their best efforts coming from long range or left-back Arthur Masuaka, who was one of their biggest creative threats on the day.

There seems to be a real balance issue in the middle of the park for Besiktas, which is hindering them against teams that sit deep. Holding midfielder Al Musrati left the club on loan to Monaco in January. With him in the team, it allowed Gedson Fernandes to be freed up and get forward.

However, since his departure, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has come into the side, which means Fernandes has had to play deeper, which isn't his strength at all.

Ole has to sort this issue out if Besiktas want to avoid more disastrous results like this.

Meanwhile, Fatih Tekke took charge of his first match for Trabzonspor, claiming a 3-0 win at Istanbul Basaksehir.

It wasn't the most convincing performance on earth, and they were indebted to their superb goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, who saved a penalty from Piatek and made several other top stops. Incredibly, it was their first away win in the Super Lig all season, and a fine start for Fatih Tekke.

Trabzon right back Pedro Malheiro put in a great performance, while Deniz Turuc was sent off for Istanbul Basaksehir.

You may be thinking that I have mentioned a lot of red cards this week. And that is because there were SEVEN players sent off this matchweek.

A fun way to end this segment.
