Both Galatasaray and Fenerbahce faced tricky away tests this weekend in the Super Lig, with the impressive duo of Eyupspor and Gaziantep awaiting the two title challengers, respectively.

This week, it was Fenerbahce's turn to take to the pitch first, with the goal of putting some pressure on Galatasaray at the summit of the table.

They faced Selcuk Inan's Gaziantep, a team who were sitting in ninth prior to the weekend and had the third-best home record, behind Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

Gaziantep started the match extremely well, and took the lead inside 15 minutes courtesy of a marvellous strike from Alexandru Maxim.

Fenerbahce huffed and puffed in the first half, but struggled to really create anything of note. Gaziantep were set up well and refused to let Fener break them down.

Realising that any dropped points would all but end their chances of a first title since 2014, Jose Mourinho made a number of changes in the second half, bringing on Youssef En-Nesyri, Dusan Tadic and Sebastian Szymanski, going all out attack.

After knocking on the door persistently, Fener eventually got their chance to equalise when they were awarded the softest of penalties. Frankly, it was a rather lame decision, but as mentioned several times before, the threshold for penalties in Turkey are embarrassingly low.

I would like it to change, but with how much play acting goes on and the attitude of clubs and managers, I can't see that happening anytime soon.

Anyway, Anderson Talisca scored from the spot, bagging for the fifth consecutive Super Lig game. As a result, he became just the sixth Fenerbahce player to do that this century.

That moment completely changed the game, and Gaziantep's resistance ended in the space of five minutes. With all the momentum behind them, Fenerbahce scored a minute later thanks to Edin Dzeko, before Fred killed off the game quickly after that, sealing a 3-1 win.

A much-needed result following their awful draw against Kayserispor last week. However, they still needed Galatasaray to falter.

After sealing a spot in the Turkish Cup final following a thumping 5-1 win at Konyaspor last Tuesday, manager Okan Buruk had to switch Galatasaray's attention back to the league with a trip to Eyupspor

Eyup are having a magnificent debut campaign in the Super Lig. Led by highly-rated young manager Arda Turan, they were fifth in the table, and had snatched a 2-2 draw at the home of the champions earlier this season.

But it wasn't to be the same this time around, as Galatasaray replicated their result against Konya, claiming another emphatic 5-1 victory.

The scoreline did flatter the away side a bit, because Eyup played really well for large portions of the match, and it wasn't until the last 20 minutes that Galatasaray started to really feel comfortable.

Galatasaray took the lead after half an hour, with Roland Sallai scoring his third goal in his last two games with a tap-in following Victor Osimhen's header.

Lucas Torreira then popped up with his third goal in three consecutive games, highlighting his more advanced role and improved performances alongside midfield powerhouse Mario Lemina. The duo were superb again together.

Osimhen put the game to bed with 20 minutes left after a fine bit of athleticism before slotting home. It was his reward for an utterly supreme centre forward performance.

The goal was Osimhen's 22nd in the league, extending his lead at the top of the Golden Boot standings. It was also his 31st in all competitions - the most he has ever scored in a season. Barring a disaster, he will certainly go on to surpass that now.

Eyupspor scored to give themselves a sniff, but Spain captain Alvaro Morata came on with around 25 minutes to go and put in a really impressive cameo, scoring twice, including one lovely finish.

There is very little doubt about Morata's quality, playing for the likes of Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Juventus and Chelsea. But he has been unable to break into the team since signing for the club on loan in January, suffering from a few injuries and the fact that Osimhen is ahead of him in the pecking order.

However, his loan deal lasts until January with the option of extending until the end of the 2025/26 season, so should Osimhen leave this summer, Morata is likely to be the prime candidate to lead the line.

So, another great win for the two-time defending champions. With 16 goals in their last five games in all competitions, they have found top gear at the perfect time. Five points clear, they are firmly in control.

Trabzonspor and Fatih Tekke find form

There was very little to be positive about for Trabzonspor fans when manager Senol Gunes was removed at the start of March.

Struggling in midtable following back-to-back losses to Hatayspor and Konyaspor, one of Turkey's biggest clubs were likely writing off their season.

But after appointing Fatih Tekke, a former player of the club who was also born in Trabzon, things have quickly headed in the right direction.

In his eight games in charge so far, Trabzonspor have won six, drawn one and lost one, and are also in the Turkish Cup final against Galatasaray.

On the weekend, Trabzonspor were involved in a thriller with Fatih Tekke's former side Alanyaspor, claiming a 4-3 win after a first half which saw six goals.

Winger Oleksandr Zubkov, who signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January, was heavily involved with a goal and an assist. He has been key to their good form alongside fellow Ukrainian Danylo Sikan, who also signed from the same club in that transfer window.

With his goal contributions, Zubkov became the first Trabzonspor player since Tasos Bakasetas in 2021 to register a goal or assist in five straight games.

So while they are certainly not perfect, they are clearly a much better side under the Turk, and progress is being made.

European football is out of reach for Trabzon in the Super Lig, but winning the Turkish Cup would see them squeeze into the Europa League qualifiers. Beating Galatasaray remains the toughest of tasks,  but they will be desperate to end the season on a high.

Highlight of the week

Besiktas returned to winning ways last Friday with a 5-1 win against Hatayspor. Ciro Immobile bagged a hat-trick for the home side, but the result ended up relegating Hatay.

In 2023, Hatay was one of the Turkish cities most devastated by a shocking earthquake, with tens of thousands of people dying in the tragedy. Hatayspor player, Christian Atsu, was also sadly killed.

Following the match, Besiktas stood alongside Hatayspor players, as they received a heartwarming round of applause from the fans.

After the game, Besiktas put out a post on social media saying: "The brave man gets up from where he fell. Our support is always with the people of Hatay."

A touch of class.

According to Flashscore's very own player ratings, Immobile is the Player of the Week after netting a hat-trick against Hatayspor. It was much needed for the Italian, who has struggled in the Turkish capital this season, scoring just twice in 2025 before last Friday.

Goztepe striker Kubilay Kanatsizkus registers a 9.3 rating following his goal and assist against Istanbul Basaksehir on Monday, while Galatasaray duo Osimhen and Torreira also make the team.

Trabzon's Ukrainian wingers also find a spot in the starting XI after their fine performances.
