Fenerbahce and Galatasaray players among those detained in Turkish gambling probe

Turkish prosecutors ordered the detention of 46 people, including footballers from top-tier clubs, club presidents, commentators and others, as part of a widening investigation into insider betting in Turkey's professional leagues.

The ongoing investigation led to the arrest of several footballers, among them, players from Istanbul giants Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

The sports betting scandal that is shaking Turkish football continues to unfold with new developments. The latest occurred on Friday, with the Public Prosecutor's Office launching a major operation that resulted in 46 arrest warrants for players, coaches, and referees.

Among those targeted is Mert Hakan Yandas, the 31-year-old midfielder who is the current captain of Fenerbahce. The player is accused of betting on his own team's games on legal websites through other people. Furthermore, Yandas has not yet played a single minute this season, after having been a key player for Jose Mourinho in previous seasons.

Among the other 26 players detained are Metehan Baltaci of Galatasaray. Metin Korkmaz, president of Adanademirspors, and Emrah Celik, sporting director of Antalyaspor, were the active officials detained.

According to the published document, authorities began the arrests at 7:15 AM local time, with the majority of suspects being detained in the province of Istanbul. Five are outside the country and are being located so that they can appear before the courts.
