Bayern Munich fittingly won the first edition of the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup since it was renamed after their legendary captain, seeing off Stuttgart 2-1 at the MHPArena to increase their Super Cup trophy tally to a record-extending 11.

Hosting the Super Cup for the first time was not necessarily a positive for Stuttgart, who ended the 2024/25 season by losing seven of their last 10 games at this venue.

There was a more positive mood on the terraces, but the home fans had to endure an early onslaught on their side’s final third. Leon Goretzka went close twice, but it was only a matter of time before Harry Kane struck against his favourite German opponent, as he pounced onto Luca Jaquez’s loose touch and slid his finish into the bottom corner from 18 yards out.

The goal had the adverse effect of finally igniting Stuttgart, who rained shots down on an infallible Manuel Neuer. He kept out each of Deniz Undav, Josha Vagnoman and Bayern-linked Nick Woltemade to preserve the lead until his side took back control, with Michael Olise heading over at the other end just prior to the break.

The home fans were in full voice to greet a feisty start to the second half in which neither side showed much cohesion. Fabian Bredlow reacted well to prevent Kane from doubling the lead, before Jamie Leweling called Neuer into a stunning save with a deflected drive as he looked to force an intriguing final 15 minutes.

Instead, Die Schwaben were left deflated just moments later when Bayern debutant Luis Diaz nodded Serge Gnabry’s cross past Bredlow, sealing the outcome and extending Bayern’s unbeaten domestic away run to 10 matches.

There did turn out to be a consolation goal for Stuttgart, as Leweling took advantage of Chema Andres’ flick to head into the net.

Despite ultimately suffering defeat to the toughest of domestic rivals, the DFB-Pokal winners will go into the Bundesliga campaign with optimism, especially as Enzo Millot is the only top player to have been let go so far this summer.

Vincent Kompany, meanwhile, will be pleased to add a second trophy since his arrival to Bayern’s considerable haul, as the Super Cup returns to Bavaria for the first time since 2022.
