In the final round of fixtures before the first international break of the 2025/26 season, this was a vital weekend early in the season for clubs across Europe. So which players made the difference and helped their sides go into the break with some momentum?

Based on our very own data-based internal ratings system, this is who made our best XI for the weekend just gone:

Goalkeeper

Alexander Nubel (Stuttgart) 8.4

After an opening weekend defeat, Stuttgart needed a response, and they were able to get one thanks to a goalkeeping masterclass by Alexander Nubel. The German keeper kept his side level almost single-handedly, before Chema Andres' 79th-minute winner against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Nubel made six saves as Gladbach dominated the encounter for large periods and prevented 1.62 Expected Goals according to Flashscore's database.

When you also factor in an 84% successful pass rate, you have an almost faultless performance, which played a pivotal role in a vital clean sheet for Stuttgart.

Defence

Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool) 8.3

With Jeremie Frimpong out injured, Arne Slot has turned to central midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai as a fill-in right-back. After a testing night at Newcastle last Monday, Szoboszlai proved he can be a good option for Slot at full-back with a very impressive performance against title rivals Arsenal.

The Hungarian international had kept Gabriel Martinelli relatively quiet and smartly inverted into midfield in the build-up in a solid performance before his match-winning moment of magic to earn the 1-0 victory.

That came in the 83rd minute when a tight, top-of-the-table clash came to life as Szoboszlai curled a free-kick wonderfully off the post and into the top corner. Unstoppable.

Ko Itakura (Ajax) 9.2

Ko Itakura is already looking like a shrewd signing by Ajax after putting in two encouraging performances in his first two games with the club. The defender played an especially central role on Saturday to help Ajax to a somewhat underwhelming 1-1 draw away at FC Volendam.

He scored a well-controlled volley inside the box after a Wout Weghorst flick on to give Ajax a second-half equaliser. Aside from his goal, though, it was a very assured display by Itakura, who made seven successful duels and created five passes in the final third after pushing up into midfield when Ajax were in possession.

David Raum (RB Leipzig) 8.4

Can you ask for much more from a full-back than an assist and a clean sheet to help your side win 2-0? Well, that was David Raum's performance at the weekend as RB Leipzig defeated Heidenheim on Saturday afternoon

The German left-back played a clever lofted ball down the line for the onrushing Christoph Baumgartner, who fired Leipzig ahead on their way to a comfortable win.

Midfield

Joao Neves (PSG) 8.9

PSG's Portuguese maestro, Joao Neves, has made our Team of the Week for his goal-scoring heroics in what was a unique match. PSG beat Toulouse by a barely believable 6-3 margin away from home on Saturday night in an early game-of-the-season contender, but that isn't the craziest part of it.

Holding midfielder Neves isn't known for his goals, so when he scored two bicycle kicks in the first half, everyone was in disbelief. It was one of those 'did that really just happen?' moments.

If the first bicycle-kick was good, then the second was out of this world as he chest-controlled the ball inside the box before producing a spectacular overhead kick into the top corner. Neves would complete a sensational hat-trick in the second half with a long-range betler to round out an unforgettable individual display.

Nicolo Rovella (Lazio) 9.0

After establishing himself as a starter last season, Rovella had to wait for his first start of the season after only making an appearance off the bench in Lazio's Serie A opener. Rovella proved exactly why he deserves his place with an excellent display as Lazio thrashed Verona 4-0.

As well as setting up Taty Castellanos for their third goal, Rovella created a second big chance and had a 91% pass completion in a classy display.

Ritsu Doan (Eintracht Frankfurt) 9.4

It is quite simple: Eintracht Frankfurt wouldn't have beaten Hoffenheim on Saturday afternoon without Ritsu Doan's brilliance. The wide man scored twice and provided an assist as he played a key role in each of Frankfurt's goals in their 3-1 away win

Doan scored two first-half goals, including opening the scoring with a lovely curling effort into the top corner to put Frankfurt in control of the encounter. A neat assist in the second half rounded off a near-perfect display from the exciting right winger.

Joao Felix (Al Nassr) 9.6

After finding his feet in his first few weeks in Saudi Arabia, Joao Felix exploded into life on Friday evening with a brilliant hat-trick as Al Nassr's exciting new front three all scored in a dominant 5-0 victory against Al Taawon.

Whilst his first goal was a smart finish, Felix's second was world-class as he fired an effort from range into the top corner before completing his hat-trick late on. Some way to announce yourself to your new club.

Bradley Barcola (PSG) 8.7

Joao Neves and the scorline took the headlines in the PSG's thrilling 6-3 win in Ligue 1, so Bradley Barcola's performance went under the radar somewhat.

However, the PSG winger was electric against Toulouse. Aside from finding the top corner from a tight angle to fire PSG 2-0 ahead, Barcola was a menace in the final third throughout in another standout display.

Forwards

Keinan Davis (Udinese) 8.9

A striker familiar to fans of the Premier League, Davis was the star man as Udinese stunned Inter 2-1 in Serie A on Sunday evening.

He gave Udinese an important equaliser from the penalty spot before setting up the winning goal at the end of an exciting first half.

Taty Castellanos (Lazio) 9.2

The second Lazio player in our Team of the Week was a richly deserved pick. Argentine forward Taty Castellanos provided a goal and two assists in a thrilling performance.

After being selfless with two smart assists, Castellanos capped off a fantastic first half with a headed goal from a free-kick.

It was the perfect centre-forward display from a striker now off the mark for the season after an impressive 10 Serie A goals in the 2024/25 campaign.
