Juventus' unbeaten start to the season is also their second-worst since Calciopoli

With Saturday's 2-2 draw against Venezia, their 10th stalemate of the season, Juventus are now nine points off first place in Serie A, occupied by Atalanta. For the Bianconeri, it is their second-worst start to the championship since the 1998/99 season despite remaining unbeaten.

A Juventus team like this has never been seen, at least not in the last 26 years. The surprising draw against Venezia is just the latest disappointing result for Thiago Motta's side, which, so far, are not meeting expectations.

With only six wins out of a total of 16 league matches, the Bianconeri have not had so few victories since the 1998/1999 season, a footballing year in which the side struggled to click into gear given the absence of Alessandro Del Piero, who had ruptured his cruciate ligament.

Also in the 16th round of that season, the Old Lady drew at home, 1-1 with Bari. That result condemned the Piedmontese team to seventh place in the standings, nine points behind the then-leaders Parma.

The unbeaten run that hasn't inspired

Dusan Vlahovic's late penalty on Saturday at the Allianz Stadium saved Juventus' unbeaten streak, bringing the score to 2-2 in the 95th minute and crushing the hopes of Venezia, who were last in the table and very close to snatching a shock win.

The scoreline certainly didn't satisfy the Bianconeri faithful one bit and they did not hesitate to make themselves heard at the end of the match with deafening whistles and insults towards the players.

Despite the heat, Thiago Motta has suffered zero Serie A defeats yet in his new adventure in Turin, which is impressive at face value.

However, the statistics also speak of just one victory every three matches - and that's a figure that certainly won't please the club, given the investments made in the summer and the clear objective of finishing in the top positions of the table.

The rankings don't lie and they show Juve nine points off top spot. It's a sizable disparity that seemed unimaginable in the first rounds of the season when the Italo-Brazilian coach seemed to have revolutionised the team in the best possible way.

What's more, Juve are now three points off fourth place, potentially six with the victories to Fiorentina and Inter in the ongoing round.

While waiting to see what the future holds, Juve must now face the present and come to terms with their second-worst start to a Serie A season post-Calciopoli.

Draws, already ten this season, cannot be the solution for Motta, who will have to think of something different to take his side to the heights they aspire.
