Why Newcastle's Alexander Isak is the perfect replacement for Darwin Nunez at Liverpool

Despite winning the Premier League title at a canter, there is still room for improvement in Arne Slot's Liverpool side.

The Reds fell short in the Carabao Cup final, handing Newcastle their first trophy in 70 long years, whilst they were embarrassingly dumped out of the FA Cup in the fourth round at Plymouth Argyle.

Disappointment against Paris Saint-Germain

Any designs that they had on bringing the Champions League back to Anfield also led to disappointment after a two-legged defeat against finalists Paris Saint-Germain.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold moving on to pastures new, it's clear that a major priority is in the right-back area of the pitch, however, having a proven goalscorer to play alongside the likes of Mo Salah and Luis Diaz could be the signing that takes them to the next level.

If transfer rumours are accurate, this summer could see Darwin Nunez move on, and that shouldn't really come as a surprise to both the Uruguayan and supporters of the club.

For a start, the striker earned more yellow cards last season in the Premier League (eight) than he scored goals (five).

Goals to games ratio for Darwin Nunez is poor

Those five goals came in a total of 30 matches to give him a poor one-in-six return, clearly not good enough for a title-winning side with aspirations of ruling domestically and in Europe for years to come.

His two assists in the same time frame also indicate disengagement from a player who should be routinely getting stuck in at the sharp end and terrorising defenders.

That goals-to-games ratio gets even worse in the Champions League where he managed just one goal in nine matches.

With a shooting accuracy of just 46.4% too, Nunez can't really redeem himself by suggesting he's just been unlucky in front of goal. For a player of his evident quality, that's another scandalous statistic.

Nunez should be approaching his prime... like Newcastle's Isak

At just 25 years of age he should be approaching his prime as a player, however, his career appears to be going on a downward spiral.

It's no wonder then that his club might be looking to bring in someone else to do the business that Nunez clearly isn't.

One player that's been linked with the Reds multiple times is Newcastle's brilliant Swedish international, Alexander Isak.

Although Newcastle have issued a firm 'hands-off' warning regarding their front man, and it's true that the Magpies are in a stronger position to keep him now that they've qualified for next season's Champions League, you can never say never where the game and business of football is concerned.

Isak's figures certainly speak for themselves too.

23 goals in 34 Premier League games

23 goals and six assists in 34 Premier League games placed him second only to Liverpool's own Salah in the race for the English top-flight's Golden Boot in the 2024/25 campaign.

Just the one yellow card evidences the discipline that's been sorely missing in Nunez's game of late too.

A 60.5% shooting accuracy stat is a huge improvement on the Uruguayan's output, and his big chance conversion rate of 50% is also impressive.

It isn't just his goalscoring prowess that makes Isak a modern-day striking phenomenon though.

His link-up play has been top class and 77% pass completion, not to mention his willingness to get back and help his team-mates - 55 ball recoveries in the Premier League and nine more in the Carabao Cup - are all signs that this is one player in total control of the football.

Isak has to improve his tackling

If there's one area he could improve upon it's his tackling. Isak attempted just 12 in the English top-flight during 24/25, and won only five of them.

Even if one takes the view that he's more than paid rent for his place in the Newcastle starting XI because of his goalscoring exploits, in an Arne Slot side, Isak would undoubtedly be required to do more.

The one issue that could scupper Liverpool's plans would be the price that Newcastle would demand for Isak's services if they could be tempted into selling.

For someone of his evident ability, well north of £100m would appear to be a conservative valuation for his services, and though Liverpool haven't baulked at such transfer fees before, the owners don't have a bottomless pit of money and have been known not to overspend in the past.

Most important decision of Isak's career

As with any transfer that could prove problematic, ultimately it's the will of the player above all else that could swing a decision one way or the other.

Newcastle, as is their right, will surely ask for some loyalty from Isak at this stage of his development, whilst Liverpool, as reigning Premier League champions, represent an enticing prospect.

At 25, he is the same age as Nunez, and arguably what Isak does next will be one of the most important decisions he's ever likely to make in his career.
