Manchester City were not expected to be major players in the January transfer window but their position near the top of the Premier League table is leading to a strategic rethink inside the club.

Five points behind leaders Arsenal, City believe the gap is close enough to justify a mid-season push - and discussions are going to take place over whether a key signing could ignite their campaign.

Arsenal’s strong start has not dampened City’s optimism. The Gunners are enjoying a great season yet the fact City remain within touching distance has encouraged their recruitment team to explore options that could give the squad a boost for the second half of the season.

Overall, City are content with their current situation but according to well-placed sources an additional attacker is one route under consideration. A midfield reinforcement is also something to be contemplated.

One name growing in prominence is Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo.

His attacking style and work-rate fit the club’s desire to add more dynamism to the frontline, particularly in a season where Guardiola’s side have leaned heavily on Erling Haaland for goals.

City are also now assessing midfield solutions. There are some concerns about Rodri’s game time, as he is hampered by further injury problems.

Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton is admired within the Etihad hierarchy, while Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Atalanta’s Ederson - both also being monitored by Manchester United - remain firmly on City’s scouting shortlist.

Any midfield signing would be aimed at reducing the pressure on Rodri’s presence while also preparing the squad for evolution over the coming seasons.

City know they also have a situation surrounding Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and a final decision on his future is expected early in the new year. But sources indicate he has shown an openness to leaving, with foreign clubs preparing January offers.

City know a departure would force a substantial reshaping of their playing structure.

With the title still within reach, Man City’s January window - previously expected to be quiet - looks set to become an intriguing moment in their season.
