Bayern Munich board member and former president Uli Hoeness has heavily criticized Liverpool after the reigning German champions missed out on signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.

Wirtz has struggled to settle into the British football culture and the demands of English Premier League football and has not had the impact on Liverpool's performances that was otherwise expected after he completed his move to the Merseyside club for a fee of £116m on a five-year deal.

Wirtz returned from injury as Liverpool on Sunday won 2-0 away against West Ham to end a string of disappointing performances that have seen them lose vital ground on league leaders Arsenal and drop to 8th position in the Premier League table.

Bayern Munich has had a near perfect start to the season with superb performances in the Bundesliga and the Champions League but there is still bitterness at "Saberner Strasse" over the fact that the German superstar chose to devote his future to Liverpool instead of the German record champions who according to Hoeness would have given Wirtz ideal conditions to prosper in contrast to Arne Slot's struggling outfit.

Hoeness certainly didn't hold back with his assessment of where Liverpool is going wrong at an event in Munich over the weekend, where he criticized Liverpool's integration of Wirtz.

"Slot obviously promised him something, which he in no way keeps. He promised him that he would get shirt number 10 and they would build a new team around him.  It's nonsense. He got number 7, and they don't play around Florian Wirtz at all."

"I feel terribly sorry for Wirtz. He received every ball in Leverkusen. In Liverpool, he gets five balls in a half, and if he loses two, he gets a bad grade", says Uli Hoeness, according to the German media SID.

According to Bild, Hoeness said further: "They spent €500m and are having a disastrous season, in my opinion, that’s because they only have superstars. They only have chiefs and no workers."

Arne Slot was asked about Wirtz during his post-match press conference after the game against West Ham, and said he was impressed by the German's performance:

"We tried to create an extra midfielder, and he was very important for us in finding that. He was good when he made a dribble; he was really good in his one-touch balls. "We had many promising moments, and he was part of many of those, I think. A good game."
