Kenya Premier League giants Gor Mahia saw their domestic FKF Cup journey come to an end at the Round of 32 stage after losing 1-0 against giant-killers BB Bread at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

BB Bread went into the fixture having eliminated Gor Mahia rivals AFC Leopards in the Round of 64. Meanwhile, Gor Mahia reached the stage following their 2-0 win against Dero FC.

Gor Mahia, who made 10 changes to their starting XI, were the better side in the opening exchanges, but were not able to break down a BB Bread side, who stood their ground at the back.

Ben Stanley came close to giving Gor Mahia the lead but his effort was spotted by the BB Bread goalkeeper. The minnows resorted to frustrating Gor Mahia with defensive play while waiting for them on a counter-attacking move.

The first half produced a 0-0 result and in the second half, BB Bread continued to keep Gor Mahia striker at bay. However, in the 84th minute, they scored what turned out to be the winner courtesy of Denis Muthini.

Gor Mahia badge demands better

Gor Mahia official Sally Bolo apologised to the club’s faithful after the defeat. Bolo told Flashscore: “As someone who lives and breathes this club, evenings like this hurt deeply.

“At Nyayo Stadium, we watched Gor Mahia fall 1-0 to BB Bread, a painful exit from the FKF Cup, especially against a side playing in the same tier as our youth setup. Football can be brutally cruel sometimes.

“To the K’Ogalo faithful, I feel your disappointment, and I share it. We take responsibility, we reflect, and we regroup. This badge demands better, and we will rise again. “

In another fixture, defending champions Nairobi United cruised into the Round of 16 following an 8-0 victory against BMC All Stars at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Former Gor Mahia striker Benson Omalla grabbed a brace the same as Brian Magare, as the Naibois cruised into the emphatic victory and stay on course to defend their crown.

At Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday, former champions Kakamega Homeboyz secured a 3-0 win over little-known Kipchimchim. Oliver Majaka grabbed a brace before Eston Omengo confirmed Homeboyz into the next round.

Nairobi’s Kuta Collections FC is the only non-league side left in the Football Kenya Federation Mozzart Bet Cup after last weekend’s Round of 32 matches played countrywide.

Kuta Collection advance to Round of 16

Kuta Collections FC needed a second-half goal from Somali international midfielder Ibrahim Elias Ahmed “Mao” to edge out FKF Division Two League (Eastern Zone) side KSG Ogopa FC 1-0 at Kasarani Annex to cruise into the Round of 16.

Ahmed cashed in on pressure created in the KSG Ogopa FC box by teammates Giovanni Lukhumwa and Erick Otieno to tap home from six yards out past an otherwise impressive goalkeeper Mark Ali.

In the Round of 64, Kuta Collections FC had eliminated FKF National Division One side Al-Azizia FC of Meru 6-5 on post-match penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation play at the Kinoru Stadium, Meru.

Kuta Collections FC don’t have a training ground, stay fit by playing friendly matches and have been relying on support from well-wishers, main supporters Pura Vida Sports Africa and player-coach Augustine Mtiang’a Kuta.

“We don’t have sponsors yet but our mission  is to have the best team competing locally, and eventually play in the Premier League,” Elias Makori, who is part of the technical bench, told Flashscore.

After having played in the premiership for, among others, Nairobi City Stars and Posta Rangers, Kuta recently hung up his boots and focused on his sports store, Kuta Collections.

The main aim of Kuta Collections is to offer a platform for unattached and young players alike to showcase their talent and keep their careers afloat.
