Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min (32) says it’s too early to talk about his side’s chances of winning the Europa League title.

Ange Postecoglou’s team finished the tournament's league phase with a comfortable 3-0 win over Swedish club IF Elfsborg in London.

Second-half goals from academy graduates Dane Scarlett, Damola Ajayi, and Mikey Moore were enough for the Premier League side to defeat the visitors and secure a spot in the next round, finishing fourth in the standings.

The result also meant Spurs extended their strong Europa League run to five wins and two draws, with their only loss coming against Galatasaray in November 2024.

However, the South Korea international is staying grounded and believes any talk of his team’s title challenge should be put on hold for now.

"It is still early stage talking about winning the (Europa League) title. We are in the Round of 16 which is very important," Son told Flashscore.

"Also, qualifying directly is very important, we will approach the competition game by game.

"Now, our focus is the Round of 16 and we will await who we are playing against.

"That’s it and that what I can only say at the moment. So, we’re gonna fight for as long as we can go."

Unlike Son, Sweden international Per Frick believes Spurs are a strong team with the depth and quality to compete for the title.

"Spurs are a top team and they have the potential to compete for the trophy,” Frick responded to a question from Flashscore in the mixed zone.

"We came into the game knowing that a draw would see us qualify for the next round but we were just unlucky. It’s not easy defending against a top team like Spurs and after the game, we thought we should have attacked a bit."

Despite playing just 45 minutes against Elfsborg, Son was named player of the match after completing 10 dribbles and winning 11 duels, the most in the game.

In fact, he has played a crucial role in Spurs' pursuit of glory in the 2024-25 campaign, scoring three goals in six appearances so far.

Manager Postecoglou had expressed satisfaction with his team's performance in the Europa League and voiced hopes that his injured players will be fully fit ahead of the knockout phase.

He told the media: "It’s been a pretty good European campaign for us. We have had to deal with some adversity in it.

"Even the first game we played here I remember we were down to 10 men after about 10 minutes. We have dealt with it pretty well considering the group we have got.

"We have put ourselves in a great position. We are through to the round of 16 and have missed the play-off game which gives us a couple of more weeks to get players back.

"So hopefully by the time the knockout rounds come we will have some more fit bodies to help the group and it is an exciting challenge for us."

Tottenham will face either Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar, or Midtjylland in the Round of 16, as the four teams are set to face off in the knockout play-off round.

The English side will be looking to end their 41-year wait for a European title, with their last triumph coming in the 1983-84 season.

They defeated Anderlecht in the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) final played in Brussels’ Constant Vanden Stock Stadium, winning 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Following their 2-0 away victory over Brentford on Sunday in the league, Spurs' next challenge is a Carabao Cup match against Liverpool on Thursday, followed by a clash with Aston Villa at Villa Park three days later.
