Former Ajax manager and Dutch international John van 't Schip (61) has been appointed as manager of the Armenian national team, the FFA confirmed Monday.

Van 't Schip has signed a one-year contract in Armenia with an option for an additional year. Fellow former Netherlands international Aron Winter will serve as his assistant manager.

Van 't Schip had been without a job since leaving Ajax- where he made 348 appearances as a player between 1981 and 1982 - in the summer of 2024. The Dutchman joined Ajax in October 2023 after Maurice Steijn was fired by the Amsterdam side. Steijn was dismissed after the Dutch record champions dropped to last in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Under Van 't Schip's management, Ajax finished fifth and qualified for the Europa League qualifiers.

Van 't Schip assumed the Ajax caretaker manager role once after Marco van Basten resigned as Ajax boss in May 2009. The following year, he returned to his role as assistant manager and has since managed Melbourne City in Australia, Guadalajara in Mexico, the Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle, and the Greek national team.

The 61-year-old Dutchman will manage his first games as Armenia's boss in March when Armenia will face Georgia in the UEFA Nations League promotion/relegation play-offs. Armenia finished second in group C4, securing a spot in the play-offs.

Armenia will take on Hungary, the Republic of Ireland, and a team from the Nations League play-offs in the World Cup qualifying group.
