Feyenoord produce clinical display to claim shock win over Bayern Munich

Feyenoord became just the third side to have scored and conceded at least 15 goals in their first seven matches of a Champions League campaign after stunning Bayern Munich 3-0 at a raucous De Kuip to leapfrog the German giants and keep their hopes of automatic last-16 qualification very much alive.

With Roy Makaay, a prolific former striker for both clubs, watching on from the stands, play stopped barely after it had begun due to the poor visibility caused in part by pyrotechnics released by supporters, with the game resuming more than five minutes after the stoppage.

As expected, Bayern set about bossing possession, with Feyenoord defending centrally and forcing their opponents to pass from side to side in search of an opening.

Then, out of the blue, a wonderful ball over the top by Gijs Smal found Santiago Gimenez, who snuck in between Kim Min-jae and Alphonso Davies to slam the hosts in front and spark bedlam.

The pressure was therefore on Bayern to mount a response, and they duly did as Kingsley Coman was twice denied by Justin Bijlow, before the Feyenoord goalkeeper stuck out a glove to repel Harry Kane’s bouncing strike and then kept out a powerful header from his own teammate Calvin Stengs.

Bayern were dealt a blow just shy of half-time as Davies was forced off with a muscle injury and replaced by Raphael Guerreiro.

And to compound matters, Konrad Laimer’s needless challenge on Stengs following a Feyenoord breakaway led to the home side being awarded a penalty, which Gimenez tucked away in the ninth minute of first-half stoppage time.

Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany elected to introduce Leroy Sane ahead of the second period as Laimer made way, with Feyenoord duly making an injury-forced substitution of their own as Chris-Kevin Nadje replaced Stengs.

However, the Dutch outfit were looking extremely confident by this point, as Bijlow superbly tipped over Jamal Musiala’s header. Even though they inevitably continued to come under pressure, their commitment to the cause was evident throughout, with David Hancko excelling at centre-back.

Ultimately, Bayern’s lack of willingness to go over the top of Feyenoord hampered their ability to create more chances as they ran out of ideas, and they were punished further still for their wastefulness late on, when substitute Ayase Ueda finished coolly from close range after referee Francois Letexier played an excellent advantage.

Following this historic victory, Feyenoord are now 11th with Bayern four places below after failing to score for the first time in 11 away games on a painful night in Rotterdam. Feyenoord conclude their league-phase campaign at Lille next Wednesday, while Bayern host Slovan Bratislava the same evening.
