Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has backed Morocco to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, stating they will be "very difficult to beat."

The highly anticipated biennial tournament in Morocco kicks off on December 21, with Africa’s top national teams competing for the ultimate prize.

Reigning champions Cote d’Ivoire claimed the title by defeating Nigeria in the last edition's final, but several teams are eager to dethrone Emerse Fae’s men.

However, the German tactician has backed the Atlas Lions, boasting talents like Youssef En-Nesyri, Sofyan Amrabat, and Achraf Hakimi, to secure their second title on home soil.

"I think in Morocco it will be very difficult to beat Morocco already, which is number one in Africa, actually. They are the favourites," Rohr told Flashscore.

"Then you have other strong contenders for the top spot, like Nigeria, Tunisia, and Senegal. You always see them competing against South Africa

"It would be quite interesting to see the same teams facing off again, just like in the World Cup qualifiers but, we will see how it unfolds."

The former Bayern Munich and Bordeaux defender guided Nigeria to the 2019 AFCON in Cairo, where the Super Eagles secured a third-place finish by defeating Tunisia in the bronze medal match.

However, he was fired in December 2021 after five years in charge by the Nigeria Football Federation due to a combination of inconsistent performances, disappointing results in key matches, and dissatisfaction with his tactical approach.

Rohr eyes modest AFCON success with Benin

The 71-year-old is set to lead Benin Republic to Morocco 2025 after helping them qualify, following their failure to qualify for the last two editions.

The Cheetahs will aim to improve on their quarter-final finish in Egypt 2019, but first, they must get past Senegal, Botswana, and DR Congo in Group D.

Considering there are no longer any minnows in African football, Rohr sets a modest expectation for his "ambitious" Benin Republic side.

"The expectation was to have a group with difficult teams, difficult to beat, because all the teams that have qualified showed us in the qualifiers that everybody can play good football and there are no more small teams in Africa now," the former Gabon, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso handler continued.

"You saw what happened at the last AFCON in Cote d'Ivoire, that small teams were beating big teams, so it will be the same (in Morocco).

"We are a small team, but we are ambitious. We want to come out of the group. All the teams you can find in the last AFCON were difficult to beat. Yes, the tournament in Cote d'Ivoire was massive."

He also reflected on the qualifiers for the Morocco 2025 tournament, where his team fought hard to secure a spot in a group that included three-time African champions Nigeria, Rwanda, and Libya.

Rohr continued: "The qualifiers were very difficult. You saw what can happen in some countries when you have to play in some countries where the situation is not easy.

"Nigeria made the experience, we made the experience, but it was very hard. Nigeria lost the last game against Rwanda. Rwanda would have qualified but we had a better goal difference.

"We hope to make a good Afcon. Benin in 2019 made the quarter-final. This time, everybody wants to come out of the group and to make the best AFCON possible."

Despite the circumstances surrounding his exit as Nigeria's coach, he holds no grudges and hopes new manager Eric Chelle has a successful tenure with the 2013 African champions.

"Nigeria has a new coach Eric Chelle, I wish him all the best and he will give you the chance to have the best players of the country."

Benin Republic will begin their AFCON campaign on December 23 against two-time African champions DR Congo at Al Barid Stadium in Rabat, before facing Botswana on December 27 and Senegal on December 30.
