In an interview published by Danish media Politiken shortly before the start of the Tour de France, Trine spoke candidly about the sacrifices they have had to make as a family, with the team trying to win the Tour de France again forcing Vingegaard to spend weeks at altitude camps, which takes away time with his wife and two children.
"I'd say Visma is pushing him too far now. I'm afraid he's burning the candle at both ends," Trine Vingegaard Hansen told Politiken. "Jonas needs to recharge to perform his best. The team's biggest wish is for him to win the Tour de France, so they make plans to get there in the best possible way.
"That includes a lot of altitude training. But Jonas doesn't recharge when he's back at altitude with the team for three weeks. He would prefer to be with us at home in Denmark to do that."
The 39-year-old says that the employer, Team Visma-Lease a Bike, allegedly interfered when the couple had to renovate the house.
"Jonas wanted to tear down a kitchen, and lay a wooden floor, but the team thought he was doing too much at home. However, I think it was also important that he would be part of the work that needs to be done at home. It was important that we were equal and did it together. If others could, surely we could too. When we had renovated the house, we were ecstatic that we could do something like that", said Trine according to tv2.no
Trine has also said Team Visma should only have one goal during the Tour de France, which should be to make sure that Vingegaard wins the race instead of also giving other riders opportunities to win individual stages. "
"I hope that he has the team's full support instead of them having a series of different goals. I think the team should focus on winning the Tour de France and nothing else. Then I think he has the best chance to win."
Vingegaard was asked to comment on his wife's interview after he came in third at stage three of the race, but said that the matter had been blown out of proportion.
"I know that Trine supports me one hundred percent. She does everything for me to perform as well as possible. I have not read the interview, but only heard a little about it. I'm not 100 percent sure what it says. I don't read newspapers while I'm cycling. So it is difficult to answer", he responded when he was asked by TV2.dk
