NHL roundup: Zibanejad scores hat trick, Wild rally past Sabres for OT win

To start off the NHL's 13-game slate on January 17th, the Minnesota Wild won in overtime against the red-hot Buffalo Sabres, while New York Rangers' forward Mika Zibanejad scored his 10th career hat trick in a win against the Philadelphia Flyers!

Rangers 6-3 Flyers 

Mika Zibanejad (21) scored his 10th career hat trick as the Rangers scored six straight goals to improve to 21-22-6. 

Both Zibanejad and Artemi Panarin finished with three points each after the latter scored two goals of his own along with an assist. 

Zibanejad now has five goals in the past five games and is now riding an eight-game point streak with 17 total during that span. Panarin is on a nine-game point streak of his own with 16 total. 

The Flyers have now dropped five in a row as they fell to 22-17-8. 

Wild 5-4 Sabres

Buffalo fell 3-1 early on after Vladimir Tarasenko (9) scored for the Wild just a minute into the second period. But the team would rally back, scoring three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead, courtesy of Peyton Krebs (4), Jack Quinn (11), and Alex Tuch (17).

Minnesota's recently acquired star defenceman Quinn Hughes (4) would tie the game up with three minutes left in regulation to send it to overtime, where teammate Mats Zuccarello (6) would cap off the comeback win with a snap shot to help the Wild improve to 27-13-9. 

Kirill Kaprizov (MIN) led all players with three points in the game after racking up three assists, bringing his season total to 30, needing just two more to surpass his 31 from last season. 

Tuch scored his third goal in the last four games for Buffalo as they fell to 26-16-5, while Tage Thompson extended his point streak to eight games, tallying 13 total during that span. 

Flames 4-2 Islanders

Four different players scored four straight goals for the Flames, leaving it be enough for the win despite two late goals from the Isles, both of which rookie sensation Matthew Schaefer picked up the assist on.

Calgary was outshot 30-19 and outhit 25-9, but found their way to their second straight win as they improved to 21-23-4. 

The Islanders fell to 26-17-5.

Mammoth 6-3 Kraken

In a battle between the NHL's two newest franchises, Utah's Nate Schmidt (4) scored two goals and racked up two assists on a pair of others as the Mammoth improved to 25-20-4, extending their win streak to three.

Utah scored three straight goals two separate times, the first after the Kraken got out to an early 1-0 lead and then again after the Kraken tied it 3-3. 

Seattle dropped their second straight, falling to 21-17-9 on the season. 

Hurricanes 4-1 Devils

Andrei Svechnikov (16) scored his first-ever regular season hat trick (the other two were during the playoffs) as he led the Hurricanes over the Devils. 

That's now four goals for Svechnikov over the past two games. Teammate Jackson Blake (15) scored the other. 

Carolina improved to 30-15-4, while the Devils fell to 24-22-2. 

Blue Jackets 4-3 Penguins

Sidney Crosby (26) tied it up 3-3 for the Penguins with one minute left in regulation, sending ther game to overtime where neither team scored. 

It was Columbus' own Charlie Coyle who would wrist home the game-winner during the shootout as the Blue Jackets improved to 22-19-7, extending their win streak to four. 

The Pegnuins dropped to 22-14-11 after losing their fourth in the last five matchups. 

Maple Leafs 4-3 Jets

After going down 3-1 at the start of the third period, the Maple Leafs rallied with three straight goals en route to a win. 

Oliver Ekman-Larsson (8) would cut the lead to 3-2 before assisting on Bobby McMann's (15) goal to tie it all up, sending it to overtime. 

Max Domi (6) would nail home the game-winner, also assisted by Ekman-Larsson, along with Auston Matthews, who scored the team's first goal of the game. 

Toronto improved to 24-16-8, while the Jets' four-game win streak came to an end, falling to 19-22-6. 

Panthers 5-2 Capitals

Jakob Chychrun (17) would score both of the lone Capitals goals as they lost their second straight, falling to 24-19-6 on the year. 

Four different Panthers players would each score a goal after the Caps took a 2-1 lead, making a comeback for the Caps hopeless. 

Sam Bennett would have three points for the Panthers with a goal and two assists, making it five points in the last three games. 

Florida improved to 25-19-3 with the win. 

Canadiens 6-5 Senators 

Cole Caufield (24) and Juraj Slafkovský (19) would both score twice for the Habs, ending the team's two-game skid. 

Defenceman Lane Hutson would put up three assists for the Habs, including the overtime game-winner from Caufield. 

Montreal was outshot 34-19, never putting up more than six shots on net in any period, yet got the win to improve to 27-15-7.

Ottawa dropped their fifth out of the last seven matchups, falling to 22-19-6 on the season. 

Bruins 5-2 Blackhawks

Bruins defenceman Mason Lohrei (6) scored twice, becoming one of five players on the team to put up two points. 

Chicago got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Ryan Greene (6) and Wyatt Kaiser (5). However, Boston would rally and score five straight en route to their sixth-straight win. 

Boston improved to 28-19-2 as Chicago fell to 19-22-7 after losing their third straight.

Anaheim Ducks 2-1 Los Angeles Kings

Edmonton Oilers 6-0 Vancouver Canucks

Vegas Golden Knights 7-2 Nashville Predators
