Despite coming from two goals down, AS Monaco’s UEFA Champions League qualification hopes took a blow as they drew 2-2 against AJ Auxerre in Ligue 1 at Stade Louis II.

Monaco were clearly still rocked by their 4-1 humbling at Paris FC last time out as Auxerre took the lead with their first shot of the game.

A corner was cleared to the edge of the box to Kevin Danois, and he superbly volleyed into the bottom corner.

Maghnes Akliouche did his best to make amends for the hosts, but his effort rolled comfortably into Donovan Leon’s arms.

Nevertheless, Auxerre continued to threaten, and Lukas Hradecky did well to tip away Fredrik Oppegard’s strike.

Eventually, the visitors doubled their advantage after the half-hour mark, and Hradecky was at fault this time as he let Lassine Sinayoko’s shot in under his body.

Things could have got worse for Monaco before the break, too, but Sy Diomande’s header from a corner looped onto the roof of the net.

To their credit, the hosts picked themselves up in the second half, and Leon was made to work early by palming Jordan Teze’s curler over.

However, he could not keep out Ansu Fati from range, as the forward halved the deficit by finding the bottom corner after being fed by Akliouche.

Before the hour mark, Monaco could not believe their luck as they were then awarded a penalty when Leon brought down Folarin Balogun.

The USA international stepped up to take it and made history by becoming just the fifth player this century to score in eight consecutive Ligue 1 matches.

Six of his last eight goals have now come after the break, too, and he thought he made it seven when he lashed into the far corner from a tight angle only for the strike to be disallowed for offside.

Auxerre suffered a further blow in the latter stages when goalkeeper Leon was forced off injured, but they ultimately held out for at least a share of the spoils, which could be a precious point in their bid for survival as they sit six points ahead of Nantes in the automatic relegation spots.

Monaco, meanwhile, remain outside of the European places, yet they will be pleased with their resilience here.
