Canada got revenge for their defeat at the World Championship quarter-final last year when they defeated Denmark 5-1 on Monday night to maintain their 100% record at the tournament.

Denmark maintained the hope of repeating last year's sensational win against the Canadians as they kept the game scoreless for the first two periods despite Canada leading the shots on goal statistics by 27-9.

Canada held a decided edge in puck possession and managed a few challenging shots on Danish goalkeeper Nicolaj Henriksen, but the Danes managed to preserve the hope of an unlikely upset.

The Canadian favourites became more dominant in the second period, but as was the case in last year’s quarter-finals, the teams went to the dressing room after 40 minutes with no goals on the scoreboard.

Porter Martone, who played a crucial part in leading the Philadelphia Flyers past the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL playoffs, then broke the deadlock just 28 seconds into the third period.

The goal left the Danes visibly deflated, and they were dealt a further blow just two and a half minutes later with a clever play as Gabriel Vilardi escaped a challenge from Morten Poulsen before snapping it over Nicolaj Henriksen's glove.

Sidney Crosby then showed his incredible experience and importance for the Canadian team, dropping it to Denton Mateychuk to triple the lead at 3:33.

Midway through the third period, Nick Olesen, the man who scored the winning goal late in the quarter-finals last year, then gave the Danes a lifeline when he cut in front, jamming the puck in before goalie Jet Greaves could get a stick on the puck.

Crosby then got his third assist of the period, blasting into the Danish zone and skating around the goal before one-handing the puck to Ryan O'Reilly in front for a superb goal at 11:49.

Parker Wotherspoon then put the icing on the cake for the Canadians with 28,5 second with a quick one-timer.
