The new deal carries an average annual value of $5.5 million that'll start next season. Pettersson was in the final year of his five-year deal that was worth just over $20 million.
“In just a couple of games, Marcus has already shown us the type of leadership, poise and character that we want in a top-four defenseman,” said Vancouver general manager Patrik Allvin. "He has a calming influence on the ice, uses his long reach and hockey smarts to break up plays and has a good first pass to help us create more offensively. We are extremely happy to get this deal done and look forward to working with him in both the short term and long term.”
The eight-year veteran was recently acquired in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins that also brought in Drew O'Connor. Pettersson has three goals and 15 assists on the year but none with Vancouver yet after playing just a pair of games.
The Swedish defenseman will now be a staple for the Canucks going forward as they look to try and improve their 24-18-11 record to make a playoff push this season.
