The National Hockey League (NHL) playoffs saw its first team to advance to the second round, while another has forced a Game 6. Here is a roundup of the action from Tuesday night.

Maple Leafs 0-4 Senators

For the second game in a row, the Ottawa Senators have managed to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs. This time, the Sens did it on the road, with their 4-0 win forcing a Game 6. After a scoreless opening frame, Thomas Chabot struck less than four minutes after the restart to put the guests in front.

The Leafs had a total of 42 shots throughout the contest, but could not beat goaltender Linus Ullmark. In the final period, they mustered 16 attempts. Toronto fell further behind 8:24 into the final period, as Dylan Cozens scored on a shorthanded goal to double Ottawa's lead.

Tim Stutzle and Brady Tkachuk added empty net markers in the final three minutes to ice the game in the Sens' favour.

The Maple Leafs, who went up 3-0 in the series, now lead 3-2 as the sides return to the Canadian capital for Game 6. That game will occur on Thursday, as the Senators will look to extend this to a Game 7.

Hurricanes 5-4 Devils (2OT)

An incredible back-and-forth encounter went the Carolina Hurricanes' way as they rallied to beat the New Jersey Devils 5-4 in double overtime. That leaves them as the first team to win their series.

Things started off quite badly for the Hurricanes, though, as they found themselves down 3-0 in the opening 10 minutes of the game. Dawson Mercer, Timo Meier, and Stefan Noesen grabbed the goals for the Devils to give them an early advantage.

It would take less than six minutes into the second period for Carolina to tie the score. Tyler Hall reduced the deficit to two just 106 seconds in. Jackson Blake then made it a one-goal game at the four-minute mark, before Andrei Svechnikov tied things up 1:39 later.

It took New Jersey less than two minutes to regain the lead through Nico Hischier. The hosts managed to return to level pegging with 8:33 left in the second as Sebastian Aho converted on a power play.

The third period decided nothing, though the Hurricanes outshot the Devils 25 to 10. Overtime was needed to decide the winner. After one 20-minute period could not find a victor, a second period commenced. Four minutes and change into that second overtime session, Aho finished off another power play to give Carolina the win.

The Hurricanes became the first team to advance from the opening round of play. Next for them will be either the Washington Capitals or Montreal Canadiens, who will meet for Game 5 on Wednesday.

Golden Knights 3-2 Wild (OT)

Later on Tuesday, the Vegas Golden Knights took a 3-2 series lead over the Minnesota Wild thanks to a second consecutive overtime win.

Brett Howden scored the matchwinner in the first period of OT to clinch the dramatic 3-2 win and force a Game 6 to be played on Friday back in Minnesota.

Kings 1-3 Oilers

Three unanswered goals led the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on the road in California, to see the Oilers take a 3-2 lead in the series.

Evander Kane, Mattias Janmark and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins all scored for the Oilers after Andrei Kuzmenko opened the scoring for the Kings in the second period.

Edmonton have now won three in a row after losing the opening two matches in Los Angeles. The series returns to Canada on Friday for a crucial Game 6.
