The National Hockey League (NHL) regular season came to a close on Thursday with six games, half of which had playoff seeding on the line. Yet it was a teenager who stole the show in one of the dead rubbers.

That was Macklin Celebrini, who found the back of the net and provided two helpers as the San Jose Sharks cruised to a 6-1 defeat of the Winnipeg Jets.

Cole Koepke had put the home team in front three minutes and 28 seconds into the contest, but it went downhill from there. Celebrini assisted Igor Chernyshov and William Smith later in the period to give the Sharks a lead going into the first intermission.

The second frame saw Collin Graf, Michael Misa, and William Eklund add to the goals for San Jose as they went up 5-1. Then, 74 seconds into the final frame, Celebrini took a shot from point blank range that beat Eric Comrie to complete the scoring.

It was the 19-year-old's 115th point of the season, breaking the record for the most in a single season for the Sharks. He completed the year with 45 goals and 70 assists, becoming just the second teenager to score at least 40 goals and 70 assists in a regular season.

The Sharks end the year on 86 points, four points out of the second wildcard spot in the playoffs. The Jets suffered a fourth loss in a row, finishing 12th in the Western Conference.

San Jose were not the only ones to prevail 6-1 that night, as the Edmonton Oilers won by the same scoreline versus the Vancouver Canucks.

Having lost their last two heading into the game, the Oilers had a fast start in the clash. Matthew Savoie netted a first period hat-trick, which was the first of his career, as they went up 4-1 at the intermission.

The Canucks, who went on to concede a whopping 316 times this season, had no answer for Edmonton's relentlessness as they were outshot 54-19 in the match.

Joshua Samanski, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Colton Dach were the other scorers for the home side, who finished second in the Pacific Division. They will face the Anaheim Ducks in the opening round of the playoffs.

Speaking of the Ducks, they edged the Nashville Predators 5-4 at the Bridgestone Arena. Troy Terry scored the winning goal with a little less than three minutes left in regulation to lift the guests to the win.

Filip Forsberg and Steve Stamkos got two each for the Preds, who will miss out on the playoffs after a disappointing year. It proved not to be enough in what was a back-and-forth contest, which went the Ducks' way.

Anaheim will go into the playoffs having won the second fewest regular season games of the Western teams who made the playoffs.

Elsewhere, the Calgary Flames topped the Los Angeles Kings 3-1, while Robert Thomas netted a hat-trick for the St. Louis Blues in their 5-3 victory at the Utah Mammoth.

The last game of the night - as well as the regular season - saw Colorado Avalanche come out on top 2-0 against Seattle Kraken.
