Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin (39) was named the 2025 Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award winner on Friday.

Hall of Famer Mark Messier personally awards the honour to a player who leads by positive example both on and off the ice, with teammates, fans, and local charities.

"I've been lucky enough to play with some of the greatest players ever," said Ovechkin in an interview with Messier.

Ovechkin has been a pillar in the Washington, D.C. community since he was drafted, becoming the standard for athletes all around the country for his contributions to youth hockey, cancer research, and so much more.
