Mikael Granlund scored with a shot from the right circle. at 1:49 of a 3-on-3 in overtime as Finland defeated Sweden 4-3 in a game that turned into an instant classic with two sides desperate not to let their bitter rivals get the upper hand.
Anton Lundell and Mikko Rantanen also got on the scoreboard for the Finns, while Kevin Lankinen who had replaced Juuse Saros in goal following the heavy defeat against the U.S., made 21 saves in his debut at the tournament, including a sensational pad stop from Mika Zibanejad seconds into overtime.
Sweden otherwise got off to a great start when Zibanejad gave them a 1-0 lead at 8:35 of the first period, scoring off a Finland defensive-zone turnover with a shot from between the circles.
Finland suffering from the absence of their three defensemen, Rasmus Ristolainen, Miro Heiskanen and Jani Hakanpaa, then restored parity at 10:58 when Lundell scored off a 2-on-1 with Eetu Luostarinen against Florida Panthers teammate Gustav Forsling.
Rantanen then made it 2-1 on a power-play goal at 19:46 when he mishandled a pass across to him from Patrik Laine in the right circle, but the puck somehow still managed to sneak in between Gustavsson and the right post.
Rasmus Dahlin then tied the game at 5:06 of the second period when Joel Eriksson Ek recovered a rebound and slid the puck across to Dahlin who made no mistake firing home.
Erik Karlsson then gave the Swedes a 3-2 lead with a goal off a 3-on-2 rush at 10:32 when he delivered a clinical one-timer after racing clear with William Nylander.
But Finland didn't cave in and made it 3-3 when captain Aleksander Barkov got the stick on a deflection from Kaapo Kakko's stick blade at 17:05.
The hard-fought win could however, come at a high prize for the Finns as Barkov started limping from blocking a shot late in the second. The reigning Stanley Cup champion from the Florida Panthers continued playing through it.
Knocking off Sweden puts the Finns right back in it with one game for them left in round-robin play while the Swedes are now in trouble and now might need some help to make the final.
