Team Canada head coach Jon Cooper told the media on Tuesday that Jordan Binnington will be the starting goaltender for their matchup against Sweden on Wednesday.

The decision came down to Binnington and teammates Adin Hill and Sam Montembeault. Binnington was scene ahead of the announcement on the ice in the starting net during Team Canada's practice.

"(Binnington) was really excited," said Cooper. "He’s a confident kid and he wants to be in that spot.”

“This kid has played in some huge moments, some big games, he’s a competitor - not that the other guys aren’t; these other guys will be ready to go if anything happens."

Binnington has a 2.89 goals against average and a .897 save percentage for the St, Louis Blues this season.

Hill (2.64 GAA, .900 SV%) and Montembeault (3.00 GAA, .897 SV%) could see time in net during the tournament if Binnington begins to falter. However, the former Stanley Cup champion is ready for the challenge ahead.

“It’s time to go,” said Binnington. “Obviously, been in the back of my mind. Getting here and getting the nod is exciting.”

Binnington is the only rookie goalie in NHL history to win every game in his team's playoff run to a Stanley Cup victory. He has spent all eight years of his career with the Blues.
