Having narrowly avoided the bottom two last season, JYP are the new leaders of the Liiga after a thumping 6-0 win over IFK Helsinki at home on Friday night.
With Tappara not in action, JYP had the chance not only to take first place, but move three points clear of the Tampere side. It took them time to get going, needing the help of a powerplay to break the deadlock through Leevi Tukiainen in the 16th minute.
Veteran Juuso Puustinen doubled the lead - also with a man advantage - in the eighth minute of the second period, before the Jyvaskyla side took full control through Jere Lassila in the final five minutes.
The third and final period was even more dominant - Tukiainen grabbed his second of the game just before the midpoint to continue his great form, then not to be outdone, Valtteri Ojantakanen added two of his own in the final five minutes of the 6-0 win.
Oskari Salminen earned his first shutout of the season, but having only faced 16 shots on goal, he was not exactly overworked by an IFK Helsinki side drop to the bottom of the standings. JYP now have seven wins - all in regulation - from their nine matches so far.
Moving off the bottom are Karpat, who ended a long losing run by beating Ilves 7-2 away from home for their third win of the campaign, as Ilves join IFK in the bottom two.
Staying within touching distance of the new leaders are Assat, whose 4-2 win at Hameenlinna sees them move into third, level on points with Tappara, who face Hameenlinna at home tomorrow as they look to regain first place, while the visitors will seek to end back-to-back losses.
Also on Friday, SaiPa edged out Vaasan Sport 5-4 in overtime, while two matches were decided by shootouts - Jukurit climb to seventh by inflicting a third-straight loss on TPS Turku, while there was not a single goal in the Pelicans vs KalPa match, before the visitors won on penalties.
