The Faroe Islands created the biggest surprise at the Women's World Championships so far when they beat Spain 27-25 to record their first win in the final round of a World Cup tournament ever.

Last year, the Faroe Islands' women's handball national team took part in the country's first-ever final round at the European Championships, where the team got a point. But in this year's World Championship debut, they recorded their first win ever already in the second game of the tournament.

The Faroe Islands, who are coached by Claus Mogensen, opened their World Championship campaign by losing by six goals to Montenegro, while Spain took an expected win against Paraguay.

The first half on Friday evening was an even affair, where the Faroese showed that they could easily keep up with the Spanish women.

Towards the break, however, it was Spain who, as expected, created a small gap thanks to very physical game. But in the second half, the Faroe Islands showed excellent fight.

Claus Mogensen's team was well organized defensively, and in the first 20 minutes of the second half, the Faroese kept Spain to just six goals.

Towards the end of the match, the Faroese women showed the most coolness in the decisive moments.

Jana Mittún, who is the sister of GOG profile Óli Mittún, put the Faroe Islands ahead 26-25 with just over two minutes remaining.

Spain then attacked twice for an equaliser, but on both occasions the Faroese were able to survive the Spanish siege.

And with seconds remaining, Jana Mittún helped the Faroe Islands make history with her sixth goal.
