Defending champions France and Germany boosted their morale with impressive wins against Iceland (31-29) and Croatia (33-27) just four days before the start of the European Championships on Sunday.

Iceland, with its armada of players from the Bundesliga, the world's top league, almost spoiled the party for 13,774 in la Défense Arena in Paris.

But in the second half, Les Bleus showed significantlymore grit in defense, exemplified by Thibaud Briet, who was relentless and tireless in rallying the crowd. The Nantes left back was deservedly named MVP of the match, and surpassed 100 goals for France in 44 appearances.

His Nantes teammate, Aymeric Minne, also had a memorable evening for Les Bleus as he played a crucial role in the French attack, particularly in the second half, where he scored six of his eight goals.

As on Friday against Austria, where France won 34-29, the core of the Nantes team proved invaluable in making the difference for France in the decisive situations against Iceland, who also proved that they are a force to be reckoned with at the EURO.

For the second time within a few days Germany proved too powerful for Croatia when they won 33-27 at the sold-out ZAG-Arena in Hannover where 10.427 passed through the gates despite snow chaos in the German metropole.

German coach Alfred Gislason will despite the win be worried that one of his biggest stars, Renars Uscins, suffered an ankle injury at the start of the match and needed treament on the sideline. Its still uncertain how serious the injury is.

The match was dominated by both coaches using the chance to test a large part of their squad, giving some of their lesser names a chance to shine shortly before the start of the European Championships.
