German Bundeliga champions Füchse Berlin and the World Best Handballer, Mathias Gidsel, fell at the last hurdle of the season, when they lost the Champions League final 32-26 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne against Magdeburg.

Füchse Berlin's attack has been unstoppable for almost the entire season, but in Sunday's Champions League final, Magdeburg managed to stop Mathias Gidsel and co.

It was largely Magdeburg's defensive, with Saugstrup as the anchor, that posed a stumbling block for the Berlin-favorites on Sunday as Füchse played too slowly.

This put a lot of responsibility on Gidsel, who also made more mistakes than usual. Lasse Andersson on the other back position also never lived up to his usual level in the final.

At the same time, the Icelandic playmaker Gisli Kristjansson had a superb match for Magdeburg, who thus regained the trophy that the club last won in 2023.

Both teams have played fast-paced attacking handball throughout the season, and therefore the final also started at a high pace.

For Magdeburg, the quick-footed back chain with Swedish Felix Claar and the Icelandic duo Gisli Kristjansson and Ómar Ingi Magnússon repeatedly challenged Berlin's heavy central block.

At the same time Magdeburg proved sharper in the final phase. Three major mistakes from the favorites were instrumental in Magdeburg gaining a slight advantage.

Dejan Milosavljec in the Füchse Berlin goal did not make a single save in the first 22 minutes. With that in mind, it was impressive that Gidsel and co. was only behind 10-12 at that stage of the match.

However, Berlin's finishing left a lot to be desired and Lasse Andersson's failure to find the net was duly punished at the other end.

Magdeburg's Gisli Kristjansson played a superb match orchestrating the Magdeburg attack and just before the break, the playmaker found Magnus Saugstrup, who increased the score to 16-12.

After the interval, Lasse Ludwig produced a string of saves for Füchse Berligan but it didn't help much.

Füchse Berlin's offense has been unstoppable for almost the entire season, but they failed to settle into their usual stylish stride in the final.

At the same time, Kristjansson had a match to remember and with 12 minutes remaining, he made it 27-22 himself.

In the end it was only a question of the size of the final victory as Magdeburg claimed the prestigious trophy.
