Defending champions SC Magdeburg also won their fourth match in the Champions League to maintain their perfect record when they cruised past GOG with a 39-30 (18.16) win in Svendborg, Denmark.

"There's a team waiting for us who are perhaps the most talented squad in Europe," German coach Benny Wiegert had warned his side before the match. The SCM coach was to be vindicated for a long time by the hosts' performance. However, Magdeburg showed their class in the second half, pulling away to remain unbeaten.

The underrated Danes put in an honorable effort for two-thirds of the game, but were then crushed by German class and physique.

Already at the beginning of the match, it looked difficult for the home team, who did not score in the first six minutes. At the same time, the visitors had no problems setting up numerous scoring chances.

GOG goalkeeper Peter Johannesson, however, pulled off a string of reflex saves to keep the Danes in the match.

Johannesson started really strong and was instrumental in Magdeburg coach Bennet Wiegert having to call a time-out at 10-10 and ask his players to up the pace.

As always, much of GOG's attacking intentions depended on playmaker Óli Mittún flanked by Hjalte Lykke and Nicolai Pedersen.

It was therefore a major weakness when Pedersen left the arena at the end of the first half with a foot injury and did not return.

Emil Tonnesen replaced him, and GOG coach Kasper Christensen allowed his team to play seven against six for large periods against the strong Magdeburg defense with Magnus Saugstrup as the orchestrator.

The German visitors led 18-16 at the break, and GOG struggled to hang on. And as the second half progressed, it became more and more difficult to control Felix Claar and the physically superior German visitors.

GOG hung on for 40 minutes. But from 23-25, Magdeburg scored 10 of the next 11 goals and eliminated any doubt of the final outcome.
