Mathias Gidsel and Fuchse Berlin on Wednesday night proved too strong for Aalborg Handball when they in the Gigantium Arena won 35-31 to win the Champions League Group A where they were already qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Fuchse Berlin delivered a stellar performance in the top clash, securing an impressive milestone in the Champions League.

With a 35-31 (16-15) away win against Danish powerhouse Aalborg, the German handball champions have already locked in first place in their group, two rounds before the end of the preliminary stage.

Star player Mathias Gidsel led Fuchse’s scoring with eight goals, while Dejan Milosavljev shone in goal with 17 saves.

Both teams had already qualified for the quarterfinals in the eight-team group before the match began. Still, the packed arena in Aalborg witnessed a high-quality contest. National team player Juri Knorr only featured for the Danes in the second half, scoring once from four attempts.

Both sides came into the game after suffering rare defeats in European competition. Fuchse had recently lost to KS Kielce from Poland, while Aalborg were beaten by Sporting Lisbon. The German champions bounced back better from their setback and pulled away decisively midway through the second half.
