Defending champions SC Magdeburg on Thursday night lost their top spot in the Champions League after the the much anticipated clash against FC Barcelona, who won 36-29 to inflict the first defeat on the reigning Champions League winners in the competition this season. Before the match, Magdeburg had been undefeated in 12 matches in the Champions League. However, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team had already secured their ticket to the quarterfinals some time ago.

Just like in the first leg, which Magdeburg won 22-21 away from home, the match developed into a tight contest, with the visitors finding better solutions in the decisive moments. The leading goal scorer for the error-prone Germans was Sweden’s Felix Claar with seven goals, while Barcelona’s Aleix Gómez also netted seven times.

Thanks to this win, Barca ended a long run of poor results at Magdeburg. The Spanish record champions claimed victory in Magdeburg for the first time since December 2005, a season in which the Catalans went on to reach the Champions League final and lift the trophy. It was also Barcelona’s first Champions League win after three consecutive defeats against Magdeburg.

Füchse already confirmed as group winners.

The German Bundesliga runners-up, with Magnus Saugstrup in action, had previously only dropped points in this Champions League season during last week’s hard-fought 29-29 draw against Wisla Plock. On the final matchday, Magdeburg will travel to Paris Saint-Germain Handball next Wednesday, where they still have a chance to win Group B, but the advantage now lies with the Catalans.
