SC Magdeburg are German handball champions for the fourth time after they recorded a 31-30 win against Flensburg-Handewitt on Thursday night.

With the 31-30 (13-13) win in the clash against SG Flensburg-Handewitt, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team secured their fourth championship after winning the title also in 2001, 2022, and 2024, with three games left to play.

Wiegert was "overjoyed" about the fourth title and told his players to "let loose now", but also felt sympathy for the opponent. The match had actually ended in a draw, but Magnus Saugstrup’s last-gasp goal was made to count after an endlessly long video review. "In the end, I almost feel sorry for the win, Flensburg deserved a point," Wiegert told Dyn.

While the Magdeburg players were already dancing in the arena, the officials were still deliberating whether the final goal should be allowed. Everyone had assumed it was a 30-30 draw, which would have been enough for Magdeburg to win the title. But the video review clarified things minutes after the final buzzer to allow Saugstrup's last-second effort.

In front of 6,600 spectators, including national coach Alfred Gislason, Magdeburg initially struggled to find their rhythm in the sold-out Getec Arena and repeatedly failed to get past Flensburg’s goalkeeper Benjamin Buric.

Magdeburg keeper Matej Mandic, who had an impressive 60 percent save rate at halftime, kept the hosts in the game for a long time.
