Gidsel also ended the season as leading goalscorer in the Bundesliga with 319 goals (only one from penalties)in front of Kai Häfner with 256 goals. He scored 132 of those goals on penalties.
Gidsel's goalscoring feat puts him in fourth place on the all-time list of most goals scored in a Bundesliga match. The list is led by Stefan Schröder, who in the 2008-2009 season scored no less than 21 goals in a match for HSV Hamburg.
THW Kiel, who had Emil Madsen and Magnus Landin in the squad, lost at home 31-34 to Lemgo and thus missed out on a top 5 spot in the Bundesliga. It was the first time the former Champions League winner finished outside the top 5 in the league for the first time since 2002/03
