Gidsel helps Fuchse to fourth successive win as Magdeburg move within a point of Flensburg

SC Magdeburg kept up the pressure on league leaders SG Flensburg-Handewitt in the German Handball League when the Club World Cup winners defeated newly promoted Bergischer HC 39-30 (19-16) on matchday 8.

"I'm very satisfied with our game," said Elvar Örn Jonsson to Dyn after the game. With seven goals each, the Icelandic profile and his compatriot Omar Ingi Magnusson were the leading scorers for the Champions League winners, who had previously played six successive matches - including the four games at the Club World Cup in Egypt - away from home.

A must-win against the basement dwellers

"We know what our tasks are in the Bundesliga. We can't afford to take any chances," said coach Benny Wiegert in the run-up to the game. Bergischer HC, which had picked up its first points of the season in the previous game against HSG Wetzlar, was able to keep the encounter with the favourites exciting until the break. However, after the interval, the home side extended their lead significantly. 

Magdeburg moved within a point of Flensburg, who took the lead in the table from record champions THW Kiel on Saturday with a spectacular 36-34 win against their northern rivals.

Also, Füchse Berlin continued their run of success. The champions won 42-27 (22-13) against newly promoted GWD Minden.

After two consecutive defeats, the capital club celebrated its fourth consecutive league win. The leading goal scorer for Fuchse, who trail Flensburg by four points,  was world handball player Mathias Gidsel with ten goals.
