Portugal and Colombia will face each other this Sunday for the first time in an official match, in the final round of Group K at the 2026 World Cup. Despite this being a first-ever meeting at the World Cup, Colombian influence has long been felt in Portuguese football.

For many years, Liga Portugal has been a competition that imports young talent. For several seasons, South America has been a fertile ground for finding young prospects ready to shine on the pitches of Portuguese football.

Brazil has always been the favourite destination for Portuguese club scouts, partly due to the countries’ close ties, but over the last 20 years, Colombia has carved out a special place in the hearts of Portuguese fans, especially those of FC Porto.

In this article, Flashscore highlights some of the Colombians who have made the biggest impact in recent editions of Liga Portugal. Remember them here.

James Rodriguez

A Colombian legend still active in the national team, James Rodríguez arrived at FC Porto as a young prospect with a lot to prove and quickly established himself at Estádio do Dragão, where he won three league titles and lifted the Europa League trophy.

The left-footer was signed from Banfield for 7 million euros and left three seasons later for Monaco for 45 million, after three outstanding years in which he formed memorable partnerships with Hulk and Radamel Falcao in the Invicta city.

After FC Porto, he played for clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but was unable to reach the level that his 2014 World Cup had promised.

Luis Suarez

Another player at the 2026 World Cup who could face Portugal is Luis Suárez, the top scorer in the last edition of the national league.

The Colombian was a risky bet by Sporting, but he didn’t falter when it came time to replace Viktor Gyökeres, establishing himself as a goal scorer at Alvalade with 38 goals in his debut season.

The status he earned in Portugal helped him secure a starting spot for the cafetera national team, although his performance (0 goals) has yet to fully convince Colombian fans.

Radamel Falcao

The list of Colombians who have played in Portugal includes many strikers, but none at the level of El Tigre Radamel Falcao.

Just three seasons were enough for the former River Plate player to be included among the best strikers ever to play in Portugal, even though he never won the league’s top scorer award, unlike some of his compatriots.

Even so, Falcao’s versatility and his stealthy headers remain vivid in the memory of Portuguese football. The numbers (see below) speak for themselves.

Matheus Uribe

In an FC Porto with a strong Colombian tradition, Uribe carries the country’s flag, as he is the cafetero with the most appearances for the dragões.

The midfielder, currently at Atlético Nacional, played 176 matches for FC Porto, even captained the team, and left Portugal with eight trophies to his name, including two league titles.

After a season of adaptation, Uribe stayed three more years in Porto and managed to stand out as a complete midfielder with a knack for scoring - he found the net 15 times wearing the dragão shirt.

FIFA World Cup 2026

The 2026 World Cup is taking place from June 11th to July 19th in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament features 48 national teams and is played at 16 modern stadiums.

Jackson Martinez

A worthy heir to Radamel Falcao, Cha Cha Cha Martínez also left his mark during his three seasons at FC Porto.

Unlike his compatriot, he was the league’s top scorer three times, although he only won the national championship once. The technical quality and spectacular goals of this Colombian, who also had a passion for music, gave us some of the best highlights of the early 2010s.

Injuries after his time at FC Porto affected the rest of his career, but he still managed a return to Portugal. He ended his career at Portimonense, where his love for the game often overcame, at least to some extent, the pain with every stride. Iconic.

Fredy Montero

Sporting tried to follow their rivals’ example and also invested in some Colombian strikers. Teo Gutierrez may have a longer history with the national team, but Fredy Montero, who was capped four times by Colombia, left his mark at Alvalade.

The way he burst onto the scene in 2013/14, with a hat-trick against Arouca, served as a calling card for a striker who wasn’t exactly a pure goal scorer, but who had a touch of class in his boots.

The Portuguese Cup final, with Sporting coming from behind against SC Braga after playing almost the entire match with 10 men, will always be a highlight in Fredy Montero’s story, who even returned to Alvalade for a less fruitful second spell. Even so, he posted the best numbers of his career at Sporting - 131 games, 46 goals, and 14 assists.

Luis Diaz

When it comes to finding gems in Colombian football, no one does it like FC Porto. The dragões were the first to spot an extraordinary talent at Junior Barranquilla and invested 7 million euros in signing the then 22-year-old in 2019/20.

The Colombian’s flair and speed on the left wing caused problems from the start, and Luis Díaz quickly became a fan favorite at FC Porto, with supporters eager for a Colombian to wreak havoc in Sérgio Conceição’s attack.

Halfway through a sensational 2021/22 season (28 games, 16 goals, and five assists), FC Porto lost him to Liverpool. If at the time the price (49 million euros) seemed low, today it can even be seen as a poor sale by the dragões.

Felipe Pardo

The fact that several Colombians have shone in Portugal made the country an attractive target for many teams, and SC Braga also went looking for their own gem in Medellín.

Felipe Pardo cost the arsenalistas just 600,000 euros and quickly justified Antonio Salvador’s investment, scoring nine goals in his debut season.

The winger’s speed, which made him dangerous on both the left and right, caused havoc at Pedreira, and his loan move to Olympiacos ultimately didn’t reflect the impact the Colombian international had in Portugal. In 2022, he returned home and is still playing in Colombia for Alianza FC.

Fredy Guarin

Another success story at FC Porto, though with some ups and downs. Guarín arrived in Invicta during a golden era for the club and won 10 trophies in blue and white, but never reached the same heights as some of his compatriots with whom he shared the dressing room.

Far from being an undisputed starter at Dragão, he was a talent who showed up when he wanted and still posted interesting numbers, not only at FC Porto but also at Inter Milan.

However, problems with alcohol, which he himself has acknowledged, prevented him from reaching another level, even with the national team, where he earned 58 caps.

Oscar Estupinan

The list ends with another striker who has managed to stand out in Portugal. Estupinan was spotted by Vitória SC at Once Caldas, where he was seen as a great prospect, and arrived in Portugal full of ambition.

His statements upon arrival, when he said he came to Guimarães "to then make the leap", showed that Vitória SC had signed a striker as confident as he was inexperienced. The initial impact wasn’t as expected, but Estupinan returned in time to leave his mark at one of Portuguese football’s historic clubs.

In 2021/22, he scored 16 goals, became a hero, and left on a free transfer to Hull City. Since then, Vitoria SC are still searching for a worthy successor.
