Former Austrian football goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died following a car accident involving the Salzburg local railway on Thursday. He was 48 years old.

Alexander Manninger began his career at Austria Salzburg and, in 1997, became the first Austrian to join Arsenal in the Premier League.

He made 39 appearances for the Gunners and won both the league and FA Cup double in the 1997/98 season.

The Austrian international spent the following years primarily in Serie A. He made a total of 137 appearances in Italy's top division, enjoying his most successful periods at AC Siena and Juventus, where he established himself as the understudy to Gianluigi Buffon and played five times in the Champions League.

After his time in Turin, the Salzburg native moved to the German Bundesliga to join FC Augsburg, before ending his career at Liverpool.

Manninger earned 33 caps for Austria, and was included in their UEFA Euro 2008 squad as their second-choice goalkeeper.

Circumstances of the crash still unclear

The accident occurred at approximately 8:20am local time at an unguarded level crossing near Pabing in Salzburg. Manninger's vehicle collided with a local train. Approximately 25 passengers and the train driver were unharmed.

Emergency services arrived, but despite first aid, Manninger died at the scene.
