This will now be the second straight season that the 33-year-old will fail to play more than 30 games after he underwent hip surgery after 20 games during last year.
"We didn't get great news today," said Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan. "Haven't spoken to Tyler yet, but probably just letting everybody know that he's going to be out for a significant amount of time - probably the rest of the season."
Should the Stars put him on long-term injured reserve, they'll save $3.82 million against the cap. However, if Seguin's injury is confirmed to be season-ending, they'll save $9.85 million.
Seguin played in his 1,000th career game back on October 30th in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He's put up seven goals and 10 assists this season.
After being drafted second overall in the 2010 NHL Draft, Seguin spent the first three seasons of his career with the Boston Bruins, with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 2011, before spending the next 13 with the Stars.
In his 16 years, Seguin has racked up 367 goals and 459 assists in 1,016 games.
