Borussia Dortmund extended their unbeaten Bundesliga run to 12 games after beating Wolfsburg 1-0 at Signal Iduna Park, inflicting the visitors’ first defeat of the season as a result.

With both teams’ unbeaten starts on the line, there were plenty of chances in the opening exchanges, and Mohamed Amoura ought to have done better when he struck well over from a decent position.

Wolfsburg were punished almost immediately, as Karim Adeyemi struck a thunderbolt from distance to put Dortmund ahead, with that the 23-year-old’s fourth direct goal contribution in his last three matches.

Julian Ryerson, who assisted the goal, then put a great cross in for Maximilian Beier, who headed just past the post.

Beier had another good chance before HT as he carried the ball into the box, but his shot was parried away by Kamil Grabara.

Despite Dortmund’s increasing dominance, Wolfsburg were millimetres away from equalising before the hour mark.

A free-kick was headed towards Amoura, and his poke towards goal came off the underside of the crossbar, but the whole of the ball did not cross the line.

Shortly after, the visitors brought on Christian Eriksen for his debut to try and change their fortunes, but Dortmund continued to push for a second in the latter stages, as Grabara brilliantly tipped Felix Nmecha’s close-range header over from a corner.

One goal was all Niko Kovac’s side needed to record a sixth straight home win, keeping them on Bayern’s tails at the Bundesliga summit at this early stage.

Wolfsburg are subsequently still searching for a first away league H2H victory since 2012 after a meek performance that saw them register just a single shot on target, though the fact that this was Paul Simonis’ first defeat in charge means there are still positives to take for the visitors.
