The University of Arizona issued an apology on Sunday after fans of the school's basketball team were yelling a derogatory chant towards BYU players, staff members, and fans following a heated loss that sparked debates online.

"Following tonight's men's basketball game, it was brought to our attention that an unacceptable chant occurred," said Arizona Athletic Director Desiree Reed-Francois in a statement.

"On behalf of the University of Arizona Athletic Department, we apologize to BYU, their student-athletes, coaches, and fans. The chant is not reflective of who we are and should not have happened."

The despicable chant came shortly after BYU upset 19th-ranked Arizona in a match that ended 96-95.

Brigham Young University is a widely known Mormon university in the United States with solid athletic programs. Their football team finished the season ranked 17th in the country and destroyed Colorado, home of Heisman winner Travis Hunter, 36-14 in the Alamo Bowl.

Meanwhile, their basketball team is currently riding a four-game win streak after improving to 19-8 (10-6) on the season, ranking fifth in the Big 12 conference.

Arizona fans became heated after a foul was called on BYU but it was on the floor rather than a shooting foul, which led to just one free throw for Arizona to take a one-point lead rather than a potential two points.

Then, on the other end, Arizona was called for a shooting foul in the final seconds which ultimately lost them the game.

"It's a bad call," said Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd.

Arizona will face unranked Utah on February 26th while BYU won't head far as they face Arizona State on the same day.
