New York Mets rookie Jonah Tong and Boston Red Sox rookie Payton Tolle both put on stellar performances during their first-ever MLB starts on Friday.

Tong, after receiving 12 runs in support from his teammates, left the mound after going five innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out eight - not allowing a single walk.

The 22-year-old Canadian retired the side against the Miami Marlins in his very first inning on just six pitches.

He eventually recorded his first-ever strikeout against right-hander Joey Wiemer in the top of the third inning on a wicked curveball - with a windup and follow-through being reminiscent of San Francisco Giants great Tim Lincecum.

Meanwhile, over in Boston, Tolle finished his outing after 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out eight and walking two. Even better? He outpitched Pirates ace and National League Cy Young award front-runner Paul Skene up until his final inning, when he gave up the two runs.

Tolle struck out two of the first three batters he faced - sending Fenway Park into a frenzy. He later received a standing ovation from the Red Sox faithful after being taken out in the sixth inning.

The 22-year-old second-round pick of the 2024 MLB Draft was the 28th top prospect in all of baseball and the Red Sox's top pitching prospect.

Boston released starting pitcher Walker Buehler, which eventually paved the way for Tolle to make his debut on Friday against Pittsburgh. The Red Sox currently hold the top American League Wild Card spot with a 76-60 record.
