Michael Voss quits Carlton effective immediately

After 103 games in charge at Ikon Park, decorated player and coach Michael Voss has brought his time as Carlton coach to an end.

Voss' final game was a hard-fought 11-point loss to the Brisbane Lions, which nonetheless left the Blues languishing near the bottom of the ladder with a 1-8 record. 

The 50-year-old has not been been able to replicate his immense success as a player in the coaching ranks, albeit having taken charge of two attempted rebuilds.

His 48% win rate as Carlton coach included two finals victories in 2023, when Voss' Blues were eliminated by his former employer Brisbane.

They were nonetheless on the slide, having been dumped out of the 2024 finals in the opening week before finishing 2025 out of the top-eight with only nine wins.

Finals football appears to be a pipedream at best for Carlton at present, despite the squad being the eighth-most experienced in the competition in terms of average games per player (107). 

The Blues also had to deal with the ongoing distraction of Elijah Hollands' mental health episode, which for days dominated the headlines and forced Voss into an impassioned defence of his coaching team

Voss' contract was due to expire at the end of 2026. 

Carlton have no shortage of experienced and astute coaching options on the free market with household names such as Ken Hinkley, Adam Simpson and John Longmire potentially available. 

In the mean time, assistant coach Josh Fraser is expected to lead the team against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night
